Horsemeat.
With a lot of horsemeat now found in food in several countries in Europe, and it being blamed on 'a criminal conspiracy', we might be thankful it's only horsemeat we've been fed on, it could have been something rather more harmful. The checks we might have hoped were in the 'food chain' are, apparently, not there.

It's just as well there are no bounds of kangeroos hopping around all over the place in Europe. We really would be p***** off then wouldn't we.

Re: Horsemeat.
British hypocrisy once again;
If we are sentimental about horses and it is therefore wrong to eat tem, then it is also wrong to feed it to our other companion animals. If it is good enough for our dogs and cats, it should be okay for us.

Re: Horsemeat.
The way so many horses have been sent to the knackers yard since the recession struck is not over sentimental. That so many food products could be purposefully contaminated and distributed throughout Europe does not inspire faith in what checks against contaminants there are supposed to be in food supply.

The issue Johnb is that we should "know" what we are eating, I will eat chicken but chose not to eat Duck, just as I will eat beef but chose not to eat Horse

I agree Jeanie. All l want to know is what is in the food. Then l decided if l want to eat it or not.

Re: Horsemeat.
Horses not intended for human consumption are treated with different medicines, who knows which horse they might be eating? A lot of horses have mysteriously disappeared from Ireland, and new laws in Romania ban horses and carts from main roads.

Re: Horsemeat.
What animals do horses, cows, pigs and sheep eat Jeanie... Assuming no intervention by humans? I thought they all grazed. Silly me!
I seem to remember learning about herbivores and carnivores at school but I may have got it wrong.

Re: Horsemeat.
I think not;
My cats would not eat horse (or cow, or pig) but for human intervention. The tomcat is partial to the odd pigeon and the natural prey of small predators is small prey animals, usually rodents or birds. As far as cats go, it is pure convenience for humans that cats are efficient at catching such vermin, which eat and contaminate food (grain) we would otherwise eat and consequently we have a partnership.
Dogs help us bring down prey that would be too big for us to hunt ourselves (say deer) and also keep down vermin (foxes and rats). Once again we have a partnership.
I am not aware of dogs or cats eating pretty much anything, though dogs will chase and kill prey animals (rabbits, deer, sheep, cows). animals only tend to eat their young when under extreme stress from humans.
the question about how we feed our pets and any hypocrisy involved is perfectly justified in my book.

Re: Horsemeat.
I love horsemeat and always have some filet cheval bleu when we holiday in France.
Tonight we are having Tesco lasagne for tea from the Meal Deal range so God knows what species we'll be consuming.
Maybe me and Mrs H will indulge in a little horseplay afterwards as it's Valentines week!

I rang the Findus helpline to ask if I could ascertain where their lasagne filling came from and they offered me 2 tickets for York races.

Re: Horsemeat.
According to the FSA and police, the Todmorden slaughterhouse was thought to have also supplied horse carcasses to the Aberystwyth plant, which were then ‘allegedly’ sold on as beef for burgers and kebabs.
Work has been suspended at both plants, all meat found has, quote, been ‘detained’ and Investigations continue.

Re: Horsemeat.
I am not surprised by any of it.
Hopefully some good will come of it and more people will put some thought into what they eat. Especially towards the suffering of all the animals involved both during their often torturous lifetimes and at the time of slaughter.
