Re: Trouble brewing with care staff
A cake has a determined size. How many slices and where to cut when too many require feeding is rarely a 'fair' exercise. Somebody somewhere has to make the decision. I don't doubt this particular 'debacle' has its downside (as have many more) but I fail to see how showing the discontent in this way is going to change anything. There is a long hill to climb before this period of re-building will be over. I doubt this episode will be the last.

Re: Trouble brewing with care staff
Despite being a fairly high-profile local trade unionist I have never been a big fan of marches and demos but they can be useful in raising awareness and shaming employers as well as providing a way of employees venting their frustrations when nobody else is listening.
A few years ago, when Pennine announced 800 bed cuts, I organised a march in Manchester behind a samba band supported by patients, staff and Jeanie and Charly. We got massive national press and TV coverage. I followed this up with a Parliamentary lobby.
Result? Not a single bed was lost and Pennine was shamed into beating a hasty retreat. We would not have got this result using any other methods. It also paved the way to the removal of the Trust CEO, Chair, Director of HR and Medical Director. All in all, a good days work.
It was a great, fun day out and reminded us that sometimes, we can make a difference.
I will be attending the NHS 65th birthday celebrations this week.

Re: Trouble brewing with care staff
I do not know why it is such a shock. It has been coming for years. Now it has happened and this is what happens all the time with take overs. I do not think the Care Workers will win this one. There again I could be wrong. The council must have known when selling the contract that the workers conditions would change, but these days it is trying to get best value for money, which is cheaper.
Though is it any better?
