I think I will go out on a limb here and say that there may be a bit of spin going on here.

I suspect all this news of big names interested is probably stemming from enquiries made by retailers about the new small shopping centre. If BIG names had signed up we would be deluged with news releases and pictures of the owners of the shops sat at desks signing some contract or another.
But then again we cant fill the two centres we already have - unless its more tat and pound shops.

True.
However Rochdale does seem to be bare the brunt of closures when national chains are struggling. But other towns dont seem to have every other shop as tat and pound shops not to mention loan shark shops that we seem to have which forces me and others to go elsewhere to get quality goods and services for me and my family needs.
Some answers can range from encouraging quality niche shops rather than national shops to open. Bit like Hebbdon Bridge and Todmorden have. Farmers markets running alongside them. Not rocket science really. Or lets just bin this whole new shopping area as we cant fill the two we have as lets be honest I forsee yet another delay or legal challenge via some court in Sweden. Lets stop and put a block on anymore kebab shops or tat shops opening in the area. Start promoting whats left of our Town to get some of the aforementioned shops to open up. Pop up shops.
For example we have a Mary Portas factory in our Brough that makes underwear. I read just the other day that they are taking on extra staff and selling their products to high end High Street shops. How come they havnt opened a unit in Middleton Arndale or Rochdale. Maybe its not part of their business plan and just sell through a distributor chain. But I cant help feeling that it would be a unique shop to have. Could work considering how popular the product is.
Or lets have bosses in charge that binned a Metro stop that may have helped Drake Street have a fightiing chance sacked. Start tackling MPT as to why it takes years to build a smalll section of track thus turning Drake Street into a perpetual building site.

Chill37: An interesting post. The factory in Middleton sells through the Mary Portas own distribution chain system of their Shop set within larger Stores.
However, did you read that the Former Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons has been appointed as the Project Lead for a major initiative to revive King Cotton here?
Former Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons leads plans to crown king cotton again
‘Cottonopolis is set to be reborn – with Rochdale at the heart of plans to revive Britain’s textile industry.’ Rochdale former MP Lorna Fitzsimons is leading the project.
‘Senior figures in the private and public sectors - including former Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons - have been working behind the scenes to build a new ‘age of textiles’ in our region.’
‘Council chiefs, retailers, manufacturers and Manchester university have been working with central government on the plans.’ Perhaps RMBC council chiefs can share their working on this with us?

I was aware of the king cotton story. But I will i believe it when I see it.
As for Mary Portas, do any shops in Rochdale sell them?

Re: 'Big-name retailers' for Town Centre?
Will any local manufacturers ever be capable of making and selling shirts and work type jeans for say a tenner? Or a half decent pair of trousers for around £20. Or t shirts for under a tenner or even a fiver? Because that's what's needed if the public of this town are going to buy in great numbers. I would happily pay a couple of quid more to buy British or Rochdale made stuff, but I cannot afford to pay much more, and that's the case for the majority of the borough's population.

And not a car or mosque-dome in sight.
The back entrance to the station was open then as well.

There's something missing here, hmm - what can it be? Oh I know what it is , this street is devoid of any litter, now that's a thing of the past!

Sorry Cyfrifia, I have just noticed that you had already made reference to the cleanliness of the street before I made my comment and I hadn't noticed it, but it fair smacks you in the face doesn't it!

It does. There were less things for people to throw away, but, it's more than that, a different attitude.

This was the time when people cleaned their doorstep and coloured them nicely at the sides with the donkey stones off the ragbone man.

There was less to throw out yes, and neither did we have a takeaway (or 3) on most of our streets but I believe that our mindset was different too, different values, grateful for what we had (however little) but most of all, a RESPECT/PRIDE in our surroundings, now long gone.

We have takeaways in Todmorden too. Some good, some not so scrumptious.

I don't use takeaways full stop, mainly because (a) I can't afford to and (b) I don't like Asian food (too spicy for me) and I am opposed to eating halal meat anyway. I don't mind some Italian food although I find pizza boring so, it's good old meat and 2 veg for me and the like, all of which I cook from scratch for a fraction of the cost

I prefer to cook, then you know what's gone into it. So many takeaways and even restaurants are iffy. Although it's good when you do find a good place, they are few and far between. Some people just don't have time to cook, I feel sorry for them having to eat stuff from takeaways.

It's officially revealed at last: NO retailers have signed up for the 'new' town centre ... six years after the scheme was first put forward.

Re: 'Big-name retailers' for Town Centre?
If it turns out that no major retailers have signed up to the centre, then Cllr Farooq should answer some questions, such as, why did he say there were? was he telling untruths? or was he conned by the developers? as someone who has influence in finance for Rochdale, is he really competent to deal with multi million pound projects? It won't be long before a 'save the black box' campaign is started

I just wonder why Cllr Faroog said they were already signed up ? I did ask at the beginning of this post to name these retailers !
