Re: 'Big-name retailers' for Town Centre?
According to the interesting radio four program that's on at the moment,
'File on four, The Zombie Effect', Rochdale shopping centre might qualify as what they now call in business terms, a 'Zombie Shopping Centre'.
Zombies have been fashionable for quite a while now, with young people getting dressed up as zombies, having zombie walks and zombie days.
Could Rochdale catch the fashion and develop the Zombie Shopping Centre theme, by getting shoppers and shopkeepers to dress up as zombies and promote zombie products? Showings of classic zombie movies, zombie clothes, zombie makeup workshops, zombie music and zombie book and comic shops, with a timely effort, Rochdale could become The zombie centre of the UK and attract national and international zombie visitors.
P.S. Before deciding I must be joking, have a listen to the program, retail and businesses will have to adapt to new realities.

So we should stop the waste of money on the new, small centre now.

It's officially revealed at last: NO retailers have signed up for the 'new' town centre ... six years after the scheme was first put forward.
So why is Cllr Farooq on record as saying he has retailers fighting to open up then?
I would go so far as saying he has told a falsehood.
Unless he can come on here and tell us something that we do not know about but then again considering a Cllr has already asked the same question and has yet to get a reply.
Unbelievable.

What I fail to understand is why a Councillor said there are retailers wanting to move into the new shopping centre when it was reported there is none at all. So why say it if it is not true? Why is the Councillor or the council failing to reply and why not tell us if they are or not?
I feel as though I do not have any trust in this councillor or the council if they cannot be honest with the voters over the future of who or is not moving into the shopping centres.

Well same applies to any promises really made by any Political party. This comment is just the latest dis-honest comment made to us by Cllr when it comes to the regeneration of our Town. All the while we get left further and further behind. I really hope the opening of the River doesnt pan out to be another broken promise to add to the list.
Which up to now reads:
Arts Centre
'Big Names' Shops for our smaller Shopping area.
I will add Drake Street Metrolink Stop as this was promised to us but we lost it due to some creative measurements and our Council rolled over at the first chance.
What next can I add to the list.

Worth noting that as well as the Comet and Staples closure, the (ex) Coop in Lord Square is currently in the process of closing it's electrical department..
Will the last person leaving Rochdale please turn out the lights in the atrium of the council offices?

Sorry JohnB, but with two big electrical retailers pulling out, there aren't actually any lights to switch off any more.

Oh but there are...
If you look along the line of the culvert end river from the de-manned Touchstones project to the new ivory tower where council exec and its hordes will live, you see a light sculpture in the atrium like a beacon of hope to populous.
Incidentally, what is going to happen to the cell phone masts on top of the black box. Surely they will not be demolished to deprive Rochdale of coverage?
Perhaps they are being installed on sky hooks.

According to the news this morning, another 170 High St retailers are about to go to the wall.
Still, I'm sure it won't affect Town Centre East.

Trust me - and watch this space as Colin Lambert does a 360 and lambasts the Lib Dems for not making it big enough (while remembering his speeches about the waste of money this oversized white elephant would be).

Is it tall enough to give coverage? How will the phone companies respond to having their leases reneged upon?

Well it will be one of the tallest buildings in that area once the Black Box is flatten and turned into yet another car park.
Although I wouldnt put it past RMBC to put a mast on top of the Clock Tower considering they already drape banners from the Town Hall.

It's not a matter f where the council puts masts, it's where the phone companies have leases tp put them.

Well it wouldnt surprise me if RMBC allows a lease to be put out on the Town Hall for AN Other phone company to put one up.
