Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
We always hope things will change for the better, often they just change. The point of a serious case review is supposed to be to help 'lessons to be learned'. The actual function of a serious case review is more on the lines you suggest, to mute memories, let time pass, defuse protest, fudge issues, allow people time to retire or seek new challenges. Lessons will only be learned by those who show an interest, hopefully that will be the general public.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
Have to say, I think that 'lessons will be learned' (LWBL) is a good way of getting to the facts and making sure that similar mistakes do not happen again.
HOWEVER, in Rochdale, LWBL is a joke and trips off the collective tongues of the council and the police far too readily and even before a thorough investigation has been carried out as MJH's post makes clear.
How can we be so arrogant as to assume that LWBL even before the full facts are known? The first police investigation seems little short of a cover up thus ensuring that lessons are very unlikely to be learned.
Even more worryingly, I have been told, by highly-placed sources, that Rochdale could be 'a beacon' for others to follow.
God, I hope not!

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
I see they were promoting Katie Taylor's book 'Lost Girl' on 'This Morning' today, she was a victim of systematic grooming by a group of Asian men from the age of 13 yrs old. Not sure which area she comes from or, more to the point, whether she was one of the victims of the Rochdale 9 now serving a prison sentence?

Hinch, the book is called 'STOLEN GIRL'.....my mistake. I may download it myself via KOBO to my laptop, not sure whether I could stomach it or not though to be honest?

Just as an aside Hinch. My lot (those you didn't get as books) are also on e-book. Might save you a shed load.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
Kobo (an anagram of book) is a free e-reader that was installed on my laptop when I purchased it Atlas which i'm sure you will know already, although I'd never heard of them. I'm sure the book is available through Amazon but I think Kobo has it's own store. I have only used it once before to purchase the book 'A Street Cat Named Bob' and it was my first experience of using an e-reader, I must say, I found the experience preferable to reading a hard copy of a book.
* Just checked Kobo, this book is available for £4.19 through them (I have just downloaded it) and Amazon have it for £4.39.

Yes. I did know ref KOBO. I will have to check the site. I don't think mine are on it as it is down to my publisher as to which sites upon which he prefers to display my wares. Believe it or believe it not I don't bother much as to 'sales' - I have another life other than to chase money -. However -I do like to amuse and recommend you read the first one in the series. It's a bit rude - so be warned.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
I love proper, paper books PI and usually prefer them to Kindle. However, when I go on holiday or am out on the move, I love to have my Kindle, loaded with poetry, classics and reference books. Nearly all of these are out of copyright and were FREE!
I have about 60 books on my Kindle but I think that I have only spent a tenner on them in total.
One of the great things is to be able to download free trial chapters so you can then decide if you want to buy or not. Downside is that you have to pay VAT on electronic books though there are loads of free or nearly free ones as well.
I read a lot of Greek and Roman stuff and these are free. I re-read Kipling's Barrack Room Ballads on holiday. I just love being able to slip a fairly extensive library in my jacket pocket.
All the usual suspects are there; the complete works of Dickens, Shakespeare etc.
Am reading Cicero's speeches at the moment plus dipping into a history of the Punic Wars. Am trying to make up for a piss-poor, secondary modern edukashun.

By the way, do not run away with the idea that my reading is all highbrow. Am also struggling my way through Ken Follett and Stephen King but I do regret that I missed out on my edukashun at school though I did do other stuff later on in my disjointed life.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
I didn't think it was possible to get that sort of stuff, sounds interesting. Must admit the ability to take one item on holiday with the literature you enjoy makes sense. I also like the "free" bits.
When you talked about the night sky in Norfolk it reminded me of the time we stayed in the Manor, our room was in an annex as the road went around the corner and I recall walking back one night and seeing for the first time for many years the milky way, it was so dark and clear.
I fear there are many town dwellers who have never seen and may never see that wonder of the night sky.

To Atlas:
What is the name of your first book sir, I would love to download it if I can. I can handle 'rude'
'Stolen Girl' does not make for easy reading but it does give a good description of the girls background and explains to a large extent why she 'fell by the wayside'. She does appear to have decent parents though....
* Just checked Kobo and your book 'Ower Darkling' isn't there Atlas

Atlas, why not start another thread and list your books. Provide hypertext links if you like.
As they have strong local interest I do not think our normal rules re advertising apply. These are more designed to stop money-making businesses trying to use us as a source of free advertising.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
I was sat 'quietly' reading Ower Darkling one evening when my daughter and her boyfriend was watching TV...they got really concerned when I couldn't get my breath for laughing ...the story is sooo real and sooo funny...they thought I'd lost the plot!
The only other book I've laughed that much at is one of Terry Pratchetts when a character in the book had been 'excluded from the human race ...for shovin'

I think Atlas runs his own charity MoJo, he'll need the proceeds to carry on with that

Strange as it may seem you are quite correct Charly. My railway society is also a registered charity which I formed in the early 1990s - and of course requires all the 'aid' (including Gift Aid) it can get. Most of my 'spare' money goes towards the upkeep of the Victorian Locomotives I (and my fellows) look after for posterity. Gosh - I'm so philanthropic - I don't know how I live with myself -
