Between two and half and seven years is an insult to the girls who suffered at their handsMojo Hill wrote:

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
Interesting piece on R4 this morning on a religious programme. Some Muslims expressing concern that they are being demonised and disproportionately targeted in relation to various grooming cases.
They want public funds to be made available so that they can go out to schools, mosques etc to get their message across.
Out of every crisis comes possible job opportunities it seems.
Two conflicting Muslim viewpoints coming across. One that said that it is the schools, mosques and madrassas that are sending out messages re the inferiority of women and the other stressing the opposite and pointing out how highly women are valued within Islamic culture.

Crikey! I'm a bit 'number blind', but that was a big mistake, I thought they would be getting life sentences. Sentences of between two and a half and seven years is a total failure of the court system. That will not do, and will not solve the problem or make society safer, these men will be laughing at that, out on the streets and into the takeaways and taxi cabs with exactly the same attitude, (perhaps with more secretive methods) before too long.

The main thing that seems to be on the minds of the grooming apologists is a concern that they must 'grasp the agenda' to prevent right wing groups from doing so. All rather irrelevant to the actual problem and the safety of children

I totally agree Charly, these sentences are nowhere near long enough for their heinous crimes, their victims will serve a LIFE sentence!

And these can all be halved at least if we are talking about time actually served with time on remand subtracted.
In other words, the four and five year men will be back on the streets next year.

Channel 4 'The hunt for Britains sex gangs'.
The program showed how the police have to struggle with an inadequate court and legal system. Good to see some expertise now being applied to prosecute these particularly nasty criminals.

[i]Are the 'criminals' you refer to those now in prison or those based in the Town Hall who are just as guilty for doing nothing to stop the events.

Quote: "MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, has called for Roger Ellis to pay back his enormous pension fund, and he said it was wrong that Mr Ellis had been "allowed to escape disciplinary action by taking early retirement".

“This report shows that there were alarm bells going off all over the place and they were ignored,” he said. “Senior officers turned a blind eye to child abuse and didn’t want to know. The perpetrators of these terrible crimes and some senior council officers have brought shame on our town.”
The report revealed that the former chief executive, Roger Ellis, “did not appear to be interested in children’s social care issues” and that there was no evidence that Ellis had any intention of investigating the events that led to high profile child sexual abuse cases coming to court.

This is all very sad. I don't see why Roger Ellis, who was responsible, and paid to be responsible at the time should be allowed to run off with the money. A lot more needs investigating, the emphasis now has to be on zero tolerance for the future.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
Yes, scapegoating is to be avoided. However, positions of responsibility are just that, and carry responsibility.
The present Chief Executive, Jim Taylor, is quoted as saying “There’s still a lot to do, but we’re improving rapidly.”
That has to be taken seriously, there is still a lot to do. Nothing is 'sorted' as yet.
A change that is needed now and for the future is an attitude of
'Goodbye cultural sensitivity, hello zero tolerance.'

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
Well said, Simon Danczuk. Thank you for speaking out and continuing to speak out. Too many have been silent or swallowed their own PR fallacies.
In my opinion, those in senior positions at the Council, who have let our children down, need to face some consequences for their actions or lack of them.
I appreciate everything Jim Taylor has said and I hope he is allowed to sweep and cleanse everywhere within the Council where this festering pool of immorality has been permitted to flourish.
I also think it is time, the vast majority of this Borough, who are good people, stood up and did some cleaning of our own!

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
A serious case review at Wakefield, into the murders of Kim Frank and Samantha Sykes by Ahmad Otak, has similar themes to the grooming cases in Rochdale. The two reviews, when completed should perhaps be compared, if 'lessons are to be learned'.

Re: Serious Case Review (SCR) Rochdale.
R.M.B.C. seemed to view that Improvement Notice as an internal matter of no public interest?
Have all the necessary improvements required in Children’s Social Care Services listed there now been made? Who knows? Who will tell? We have heard some broad, positive statements, but, the devil is in the detail. Details that have previously been overlooked on a grand scale.
The impression is that the new Chief Exec., Jim Taylor has grasped the nettles and vigorously put in place a series of attempts to cover and improve a disastrous situation. The problems are deeply embedded though, it would be reckless to assume they have gone away. That 'deeply embedded' aspect is what distinguishes Rochdale from other towns with similar problems.
In retrospect of what went on in R.M.B.C. when 'alarm bells were ringing'; to establish confidence in Rochdale generally, those who wrecked it's reputation need to face the consequences. If they fade from view, to enjoy the rewards of incompetence, it hardly sets a good precedent for the future.

This is Rochdale but Lessons will be learned.
I think the Improvement Notice was also part of a national Policy: Making local councils more transparent and accountable to local people
URL you requested to the actual Improvement Notice: -
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/improvement-notice-issued-to-rochdale-metropolitan-borough-council
Then, we had the dreary, long-awaited council’s own review published: -
24 May 2013 : -

24 May 2013 : -
http://www.rochdale.gov.uk/the_council/policies_and_plans/reviews/independent_review_of_cse.aspx
That appeared tedious, lacklustre and undistinguished against the original 'review context' implied last year, so comments about it may be seen, perhaps predictably, as remarkable by their very absence .... I do wonder how many people actually read it!
